SAT

Scholastic Assessment Test or SAT is a standardized tool often required by universities in abroad to get admission or acquire great scholarships. This test is administered by the College Board and is a major step towards securing your place in the best under-grad schools. This exam is most popular for undergraduate courses in the USA and Canada. It is widely accepted by other countries as well like Australia, Singapore and the UK.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Any candidate who is in high school or has completed it can appear for the test. Students can take the SAT exam numerous times as the best score is taken into consideration by the universities. This test is also free from the age criteria. The exam is administered 5 times in India every year in March, May, August, October and December.

    STRUCTURE

    The SAT is a paper – based delivered test and examines candidate’s knowledge within the core areas of reading, writing and mathematics.

  • • VERBAL consists of two subsections - Evidence based Reading and Writing.
  • • MATH includes two subsections – with calculator and without calculator
  • • ESSAY WRITING (OPTIONAL)

VERBAL (800 marks)

This basically covers topics like reasoning,vocabulary,reading comprehension and grammar. Questions are in the form of multiple choice.

Reading: There are exactly 5 passages in the form of 52 questions and the time duration for the particular section is 65 minutes. The five passages on the Reading Test include four standalone passages and one pair of passages that you read together. The standalone passages and the paired set are each 500–750 words.

Language & Writing: There are about 44 questions and the time given is 35 minutes. This section also includes 4 passages and are 400- 450 words each. There are 11 questions in one passage. The difficulty level varies in this section. The passages are about a variety of topics, including careers, science, the humanities, and history and social studies.

MATHEMATICS (800 MARKS)

This section covers topics like Algebra,Arithmetic,Geometry and Data Analysis Problems. Questions are asked related to real life situations. The level and the topics are quite familiar to the applicants as it’s the basic formulas which are to be applied to score good. As mentioned earlier, this section is divided into two parts. The section is given specific attention for students going for science, technology, engineering, or math.

With Calculator: This portion consists of 38 questions and the given time is 55 minutes. There are about 30 multiple – choice questions and 8 grid – in questions.
Without Calculator: This portion consists of 20 questions and the time duration is 25 minutes. There are 15 multiple choice questions and 5 grid – in questions. In both portions, most of the test is multiple choice, but some of the questions at the end ask you to write the answer and these are called “grid-ins” questions.

ESSAY WRITING

This section is optional and here a passage of 650-700 words is given and the candidate will have to analyze and then elaborate how author’s argument is organized. Duration for this section is 50 minutes.

SCORE RANGE Both Math and Verbal have 200-800 score range whereas Essay Writing has 2-8 score range.
